Travel Log and Photo Essay for the
. . . .
Everglades National Park and Mayan Ruins of Mexico
 |
I explored the
Everglades National Park on an airboat with my Miccosukee
Indian guide, Dan "Proud Bird" Manman.
|
 |
The Native
American name for this area of the Everglades is Pahayokee,
or "grassy waters". The sawgrass next to me has saw-like
edges and is dangerous for airboaters.
 |
I found a boa
constrictor that wasn't hungry. It was a cool day so it
wasn't very active. However, sensing the heat from my
arms, it started to wrap itself around them to get warm.
 |
On our way to
Mexico, I sharpened my skeet shooting skills off the
fantail of the H.M. Leeward. We won't mention how many
clay pigeons I hit.
 |
After arriving
in Cozumel, Mexico, I explored the Mayan ruins of San
Gervasio. This is the sacrificial alter. I felt uneasy
standing near it.
 |
Working as
lookout on the bridge of the Leeward during our return
voyage. There is no helm or steering wheel. Everything is
done electronically using controls similar to a
PlayStation game.
